Meet The New Girl

November 14th, 2008 by SocProf and tagged , , , ,

Jasmin This is Jasmin, the new girl I am sponsoring via Children International (see the flash banner on the right, why don’t you all click and start sponsoring as well?). She’s 7 and lives with her mother in the Dominican Republic, on $70/month.

Jasmin will be the 8th girl I will be sponsoring through CI. I always pick girls with single mothers (and the first person who says it’s sexist gets a whack over the head).

The sponsorship costs me $22/month. That one less book or DVD I’ll buy. And it’s tax-deductible, AND it allows me to lord it over unfortunate others.

    sexist !!!! [ducks]

i sooooo approve, of course. plus, the caribbean is “my” little corner of the world, so thanks for that too.

but $22 for only one book? you obviously don’t haunt friends of the library sales.

How’s the Caribbean your little corner of the world??

And yeah, I know… I have this weird relationship with books where they have to be new and pristine (even AFTER I’ve read them).

As a single mother, I applaud that decision. Although I live in the developed world and had a satisfactory job for most of my kid’s life and now have a really good job, it’s still a struggle. The barriers faced by single mothers in the developing world are phenomenal. And, although I have a son, I also applaud your choice of supporting of daughters. We all know that sexism erects (pun, get it?) all kinds of barriers for women and girls all over the world.

i’ve lived there, worked there, and lived in miami too, which has many more caribbean immigrants than just the cubans you always hear about.
